Project Statement
Mad Monkey is a hip Korean restaurant that serves spicy tofu stew (soon dubu-jjigae). This restaurant is marketed as casual, emphasizing its signature spicy tofu stew, which is as hot as the customer wants. The problem is making a menu design that best reflects the brand's casual and fun tone while emphasizing the spiciness of its signature dish.
The project required researching the inspiration for the menu design and making iterative changes based on client feedback.
Researching and Sketching Ideas
Before making any design sketch, I created a mood board that will help me base my design on the visual language of the menu. The mood board helps find the type of typefaces, imagery, and color that can help make each different element of the menu harmonious.
The next step is sketching the design of the menu by making as many possible layouts. This menu must have the dish's name, prices, divided sections of words, and the restaurant name. A sense of hierarchy across the menu is important in guiding the customer to read the menu's contents. I chose the best sketch for the layout that best conveys the order in the three columns divided by food type.
Iterative Designs
I transferred the sketches to InDesign and started to digitalize the menu design. Each draft is based on feedback from the client that focuses on creating the layout and refining the design to be more visually appealing.
